HEY GUYS!!!
I'm sorry it's been a while, a lot of you have messaged me HARD asking if i still write LOL it hasn't even been that long but yeah i'm back, had to focus on Uni work for a bit. I hope you guys are cool though. LOL
Today's topic is a bit funny because i was thinking "whose message am i gonna choose to write for my next blog?" and I found myself in a little situation so i thought i'd write about it. Please bear with me, it's VERY slow paced because i have to let you know how much calories my brain burnt with this particular experience...
A few days ago, my friend and I (he's permitted me to use his name but i won't so we'll call him Levi), Levi, were coming out of our lecture theatre and we entered the next building to go into a computer room. We met up with these guys in our year and we started talking. SOMEHOW, the conversation got to a point where we were talking about Africa...before i continue, let me set this straight, Levi is GHANIAN, i am Nigerian. In the group, there were two black people (non African), another African and the subject of this blog who is HALF NIGERIAN & HALF ZIMBABWEAN, we shall call him BABATUNDE (this is because his actual name is a typical Nigerian name).
He made a statement saying "West Africa is backwards", now i don't know about you but i interpreted this statement as "West Africa is dumb and stuck with the unfortunate case of illiteracy". I heard it and i immediately wanted to hear his reason for this very bold statement. He was asked where he's from and he said "i am half Nigerian but i prefer the other half"- again, that's fine but WHY?
"someone told me back in the day, there were no ATM machines in Nigeria"
"someone told me that weren't KFC!!"
"SOMEONE told me....." was ALL he kept saying
Levi asked BABATUNDE where he was born, he said NIGERIA...he'd spent four years in Nigeria and moved to Zimbabwe, the NONE backward country in the southern parts of our lovely Africa and so with the four year experience he had there and based on what people (most probably ignorant people) have told him, he made his judgement on an entire quarter of a Continent...
GUYS to show you how much we wanted him to take 30seconds out to listen to himself speak, Levi said "well, if you're gonna diss Nigeria, you might as well diss Ghana too, we're similar countries BOTH in West Africa" and he said "well, if you're going to link your country with Nigeria then *chuckle* that's you"
"someone even told me that around 1995, Nigeria didn't even have an international Airline and they still don't" ...at this point, guys, i knew i should have been ashamed of myself for paying this guy ANY attention, he had NO back up, NO argument, NO good points- he just had some weird hatred for a country he knows NOTHING about and tried to pass it across as a conversation.
And so Levi took it upon himself to ask him a few questions to shed some light on this weird situation because NOBODY knew what to think...
He started stuttering and said we were attacking him and he didn't want to speak any more- after begging him to respond, he then said he didn't know how to answer
I attempted to help by asking him if what he felt about West Africa was PERSONAL or FACTUAL, somehow he managed to ignore my question and it was EXTREMELY obvious that we were probably being punk'd because that was 15 mins of my life i will NEVER get back because of ignorance.
If this guy had done his research WELL before he'd attempted to have an argument about it, three things:
1) he wouldn't have looked as stupid in front of the non Africans that were staring at him blankly because he was chatting so much nonsense
2) he may not have changed our minds but we'd learn something from the debate and he would have probably gained our respects
3) he would know that Zimbabwe is in the top ten poorest countries in the world- i won't even give you the number, go and look for it yourself!!
Not trying to disrespect him but why would someone who LOOKS Nigerian, has a tiny lil accent, has Nigerian first and last name, want to diss his roots? Does he know that if he has kids and he has a son, he'll have Nigerian grand CHILDREN and unless someone changes their name LEGALLY or they stop having sons- THAT BLOODLINE WILL KEEP FLOWING.
And this isn't just about him, this is for all of you out there trying to deny your REAL roots based on what you have seen on television or what some ignorant, narrow-minded person has told you- GROW UP and get up and go and either experience it or look into it before you start making judgements. I feel REALLY sorry for you if you think because your passport is a different colour or whatever your weird ass reason is you're not who you are...GO AND GET YOUR FACTS.
I'd like to know why there's a rivalry between African countries, i don't get it- AREN'T WE ALL FROM THE SAME CONTINENT? Is it cos it's called a Continent we think it's not close enough for us all to be family? We really should ALL love each other (i mean world wide) but okay so that's too big but REALLY ???People from the same continent, you can't see the fact that from OUTSIDE that continent YOU'RE ALL THE SAME. An African would see a Spanish and French person and call them European and an American would see a Zambian and a Kenyan person and call them Africans- if you guys can't even respect or have that love somewhere for each other how won't some stupid ass country come and take advantage- we don't even have each other's backs.
okay, i'm going off point here...
Please stop arguing blindly, it's STUPID!! It's embarrassing, seriously, don't come to me and argue blindly or narrow mindedly because i will show you just how stupid you're trying to make yourself seem.
I make no apologies to whoever is offended by this blog, it's what it is...after a certain age, you're kinda expected to use your head and think- don't go by what he said or she said cos he and she might be wrong seeing as they've probably also heard it somewhere too- CHINESE BLOODY WHISPERS!!
TILL NEXT TIME,GUYS!!!
Great post. I think he is suffering from an identity crisis and thats fine. He will get back to the culture and his roots in due time. The same can be said for Nigerians who move to yankee or jand and lose their self in another man's culture.
ReplyDeleteYou have to understand that you cant save everyone and there will always be these folks. I ignore them now, pat them on the back and tell em "One day you will wake up and come back to your original side. Enjoy the view for now".
I'm Nigerian and Bajan. Born and raised in Lagos. Embrace both but I'm naija for life and no one will ever take that away. Nigeria made me who I am and I thank God for that. Peace.
P.s. Great blog btw.
