It's me today, not a poem, not a fictional character- it's Shayo Grass.
I haven't done this in a while, you know...ranted...
I don't even know how to introduce it so i'll just go straight to the point. Basically, there was a rumour this morning (26/11/12) about a BRT bus in Lagos that went over the 3rd mainland bridge packed full with people and fell into the lagoon.
I even got a BC message on BBM saying "BRT fell into the lagoon...pray for the victims pls...the authorities are on site helping the victims" ....I can't and won't even try to express how irritated I was for getting a BC in the first place and then it was a BC about a LIE!!!
I'll get into my beef about the retard that started the rumour in the first place later in this post or ..not. HOWEVER, as a Media student, still struggling to get my degree and plan to go back to a country to look for a job from people who are already in the industry MESSING IT UP, i'm sure you've figured out by now that I AM PISSED!!
This is why our parents have NO RESPECT for the Arts, when we have stuff like Nollywood doing things wrecklessly with PRODUCTION, INVESTMENTS (money and time) AND ACTING and messing things up for us and the News platforms having LITTLE OR NO COMMON SENSE when it comes to broadcasting.
Tell me how as a News site or station, you get a piece of information unofficially and then without confirming it, you broadcast it. Now i'm guessing (as it is with most broadcasters) they want to be the first to share it...but at what cost?
This is what happened with the Dana Airline event and when the UN building got bombed in Abuja, people rushed to their televisions and checked the local stations in the hope to get more information and AIT was showing Igbinidion's party in South Africa, NTA was doing God knows what...NIGERIANS had to switch to CNN, SKY NEWS AND ALJAZEERA to see what was going on, they even had video clips of the disasters...
IS THIS LIFE?
Families who had relatives who were near those areas and could not afford to have those channels on their Television must have just died mentally because they would not know what to think. This morning too, imagine the amount of people who had their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons or daughters in a BRT bus this morning would have suffered unnecessary temporary heart attack because our News sites are stupid and careless- right now i'm not in any state to care about who is offended by this post. If you are, you probably broadcasted the rumour on your News site or Radio or ( God help you) Television News Channel.
At this point, i'd rather have international broadcasters take over our Industry, at least until we get it right. There is no point saying we have a Media industry if we get our clips, stories and pictures from CNN and SKY news. How long are we going to keep saying our country is bad or our system is messed up if we do not seek help?
I LOVE NIGERIA do not get me wrong however it's stupidity like this that makes it SO hard to defend the place.
And to the person/people who started such a NASTY rumour this morning, you have your own coming to you, that's all. GET A DAMN JOB!!! OR DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL WITH YOUR LI(FE)VES.

Your annoyance is not misplaced. Its very disgusting to be honest. Like we don't care if its the fact or not as long as we're just publishing( or posting as the case may be).
ReplyDeleteTo think we're meant to have a regulating body like the NBC ehn? The likes of Aunty Linda shouldn't be running around lose.
YOU KNOW!! I don't even know why we have a regulating body if they're not even scared that they might be penalised which might make them want to be careful...but like i said,it's very embarrassing.
